Iskraemeco will be introducing Smart Metering benefits to the entire Carinthia region in Austria within the next five years

Iskraemeco, d.d., one of the leading smart metering providers recently signed a contract with two Austrian utilities for the deployment of a smart metering solution. KNG - Kärnten Netz GmbH is part of the Kelag group (majority owned by the energy giant RWE) and responsible for the operation and distribution of electricity to the entire Carinthian region of Austria. Stadtwerke Kapfenberg GmbH is the second utility that will replace its entire existing meter population with smart meters.

Iskraemeco and its` partner company, Siemens AG Österreich, will deliver around 95.000 smart electricity meters to the energy companies in the next two years. First smart meter deliveries are planned to start end of 2016. Until 2024 there is an option for increasing the smart meter quantities for additional 250.000 pieces. “We were convinced by state-of-the art smart meters from Iskraemeco and the vast experience the company has in smart metering,” said Gerald Obernosterer, Smart Metering project manager at KNG-Kärnten Netz GmbH.

Majority of the smart meters will be based on the new generation of G3-PLC communication technology, the rest will transfer data using GSM/GPRS.

“This project is the result of our efforts that we have been investing in smart metering for the past few years. We are excited to be part of this rollout that will be beneficial for the end consumers and will strengthen the utilities `energy distribution system,” said Dieter Brunner, CEO of Iskraemeco.

Iskraemeco`s AM550 smart electricity meter, deployed within this project will allow KNG Kärnten Netz and Stadtwerke Kapfenberg to perform remote meter readings and reduce the amount of field work. As explained by Gerald Obernosterer, Smart Metering project manager at KNG-Kärnten Netz GmbH, “the implementation of a smart metering system will significantly improve the level of energy efficiency in our system. It will enable the development of distributed generation that will play a major role in the future energy market.

Delivering End-to-End security is one of the crucial elements within this smart metering project. Enhanced security mechanisms will provide extra security for valuable metering data and enable the utilities to respond dynamically and confidently to new market opportunities. Interoperability and interchangeability of smart electricity meters are assured on the basis of specifications of the IDIS association.

This project aims to promote a higher involvement of end-consumers in their energy consumption practices. For this purpose a special web portal for end consumers will be implemented by KNG-Kärnten Netz, allowing them to monitor their daily energy consumption. With distributed generation on the rise, the introduction of a smart system is a must for Austrian utilities and one of the fundamental steps for smart grid implementation.
