Croatia started with the modernisation of its electricity distribution network. Iskraemeco smart metering solution, consisting of smart meters and SEP2W Head-End are vital components of the planned smart grid transition. Cooperation with the sole utility in Croatia, HEP ODS (Hrvatska Elektroprivreda – Operator distribucijskog sustava d.o.o.) that manages a network of 2.3 million metering points is a successful business model enabling optimisation of the Croatian network.
The first stage of smart grid transformation started beginning of 2016 with the integration of SEP2W Head-End system for meter data collection and processing into the utilities` IT infrastructure. With this step the utility was able to improve their billing services and minimize system costs. Optimised metering processes enable better monitoring of metering data and allow HEP ODS to perform demand response. When the smart metering transition is complete, SEP2W is going to play an integral part in managing the entire smart network in Croatia.
After a successful and seamless integration of the Head-End solution, the second project stage includes an upgrade on the hardware side. Iskraemeco smart meters will provide the utility maximum security for metering data and enable remote connection/disconnection of an individual meter from the network. This will lower utilities operational costs significantly. HEP ODS chose Iskraemeco smart meters with PLC and GSM/GPRS communication since they are the most suitable solution for the existing environment.
HEP ODS manages a network consisting of 2.3 million metering points and plans to equip 45.000 metering points throughout the country (households and small commercial environments) within one year. The roll-out of Iskraemeco smart meters already began in September 2016. Croatia intends to equip the entire network with smart meters by end of 2030. Transition to the smart metering infrastructure will have a significant impact on the efficiency of electricity supply.
